The last few years have seen a rise in online advertisements by celebrities and influencers on contentious products like cryptocurrencies, NFT’s, and online gambling. Consumers are becoming increasingly susceptible to bait advertisements and scams. In order to combat this rise, The Department of Consumer Affairs, Government of India, released a guide titled ‘Endorsements Know-hows! for Celebrities, Influencers and Virtual Influencers on Social Media Platforms’. The article presents a brief overview of these Guidelines and highlights the enforceability issues that may arise with the same.
