Petitions were filed by journalists N Ram, Sashi Kumar, advocate ML Sharma, and Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas after reports by Amnesty International and others revealed the use of Pegasus spyware on Indian citizens, including activists, politicians, and judges. The petitioners argued that such surveillance has severe implications for privacy, freedom of speech, and national security. Forensic analysis by Amnesty International confirmed Pegasus-induced breaches in targeted mobile phones. The petitioners sought disclosure from the Union of India on whether it or its agencies licensed the spyware. The matter is pending before the Supreme Court, with the next hearing on 22 April 2025.
