Comments on the draft Telecommunications (Critical Telecommunication Infrastructure) Rules, 2024

On 28 August 2024, the Department of Telecommunications released the draft Telecommunications (Critical Telecommunication Infrastructure) Rules, 2024. The Rules aim to safeguard critical telecommunications infrastructure in the country. Any telecommunications network whose disruption may have a debilitating impact on national security, economy, public health or safety may be notified as critical telecommunications infrastructure. The Rules would be applicable to entities engaged in telecommunication activities and shall require compliance with a host of obligations, including appointing a nodal officer, that is, Chief Telecommunication Security Officer (CTSO) (Rule 6), and ensuring hardware and software components meet certain requirements (Rule 4).

SFLC.in has submitted its objections and suggestions on the draft rules.
