Civil society organisations call on govt. to stop gutting of RTI Act

Over 30 civil society organizations are urging the Union government to avoid gutting the Right to Information Act, 2005, the National Council for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI) announced on Friday (March 21, 2025). An amendment to the RTI Act passed in 2023 — which has not yet come into effect — would drastically limit the amount of information that government agencies would be required to share, activists said, upping pressure on the government to keep the law intact.

The other organisations supporting this effort include the Article 21 Trust, the Center for Financial Accountability, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, the People’s Union for Civil Liberties, and the Software Freedom Law Center, India.
