About the event:

SFLC.in is hosting a discussion on “Beyond the Report Button: Rethinking Digital Rights and Remedies” and the official launch of our 24/7 digital rights helpline, RightsLine.

SFLC.in’s RightsLine, a 24/7 digital helpline providing pro bono legal assistance to individuals facing digital rights violations, has highlighted operational gaps in existing digital grievance redressal mechanisms.

Through two panel discussions, ‘Scam vs System: The Race Between Fraud and Response’ and ‘User Rights: Between Platforms and Processes,’ the event will bring together stakeholders from government, technology platforms, civil society, and the creator community to examine these challenges and explore ways to make grievance redressal mechanisms more transparent, accessible, accountable, and effective.

Date: 29th September 2026
Time: 6:00-9:00 PM
Venue: India International Centre Annexe, Delhi

Panel 1: Scam vs System: The Race Between Fraud and Response

Cyberscams and cyberfrauds are increasingly cross-platform in nature, leaving victims to navigate several institutions with limited awareness of where to report, what evidence to preserve, how to follow up, or what happens after filing a complaint. At the same time, public awareness around cyber scams and cyber fraud often focuses on individual responsibility without adequately addressing systemic issues around platform design, financial safeguards, law-enforcement coordination, and accessible grievance redressal.

The panel will bring together various stakeholders to examine the gaps between awareness, reporting, investigation, and remedy and explore how existing systems can become more accessible and effective for victims.

Panel 2: User Rights: Between Platforms and Processes

SFLC.in’s RightsLine has received a significant number of cases concerning online free speech, many arising from users’ grievances against platform decisions, whether automated or otherwise. The sheer intractability of automated grievance redressal systems exacerbates the issue. To compound matters, the Grievance Appellate Committee, formed to assist ‘Digital Nagriks’ with platform decisions, is currently facing a pendency of 50,000 appeals.

The panel will bring together stakeholders to examine the challenges they face in addressing online grievance redressal complaints. It will explore the role that tools like RightsLine can play in supporting users and alleviating pressure, while also identifying sustainable solutions that ensure users’ rights are effectively protected.
