SFLC.in Celebrates Global Encryption Day 2025!

An event dedicated to building a tech and rights-based understanding of E2EE.

In the past few years, India’s technology law and policy landscape has been undergoing seismic shifts. Multiple legislations governing telecommunications, platform regulation, and data protection have been introduced or swiftly passed without much room for public or parliamentary debate. A worrying trend has emerged: an increasing number of these laws either directly or indirectly mandate the creation of “backdoors” in end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging services, allowing access to private messages and personal data.

SFLC.in finds this deeply troubling. The dismantling of strong encryption not only threatens our fundamental rights but also jeopardises our collective digital future, particularly in an era where cyberattacks are growing in frequency and scale, often targeting and exposing highly sensitive personal information.

Why Encryption Matters More Than Ever

Strong encryption is a cornerstone of a safe and secure internet. It protects journalists communicating with sources, lawyers speaking with clients, activists working under threat, and everyday people who simply want their personal conversations and financial details to remain private. Yet, the push to weaken encryption is often framed as a trade-off, governments argue it’s necessary to protect children from exploitation or to combat terrorism.

While these goals are undeniably important, breaking encryption is not the answer. Any “backdoor” created for government access will inevitably become a vulnerability exploitable by malicious actors. Once trust in digital communications is broken, the damage is irreversible.

This is why Global Encryption Day celebrated annually around the world- is more than just a symbolic occasion. It is a chance to reaffirm the value of encryption, educate the public, and mobilise collective action to defend it.

To mark Global Encryption Day 2025, SFLC.in is bringing together leading voices in law, policy, and technology to critically examine the push to weaken E2EE.

On this occasion of Global Encryption Day, SFLC.in invites you to be part of the conversation. Whether you are a policymaker, a technologist, a journalist, or simply a concerned citizen, your voice matters. Together, we can challenge the misconceptions around encryption, push back against policies that threaten it, and work towards a future where privacy and security remain non-negotiable rights for all.
