After the Delhi High Court reportedly slammed Wikipedia and threatened it with a ban in India, Wikimedia Foundation, the organisation behind Wikipedia, has clarified its position. Wikipedia, in a statement, asserts that it remains committed to India and that it would take steps to ensure that it doesn’t have to face the likelihood of a ban.
The news report featured the tweet of Mishi Choudhary, founder of SFLC.in. She tweeted on September 5, “This is a bad case with observations that don’t recognise how it works. Wikipedia is non-profit, not a business. Asking for details of community of volunteers that make this invaluable source possible for a defamation suit will open a can of worms. Bad precedent.”
